Prevent Child Abuse Louisiana honors CCDBR Social Worker
Catholic Charities Barbara Thompson, LCSW, (CCDBR) received The Champion for Children Award from Prevent Child Abuse Louisiana (PCAL) at its “Kids Are Worth It!”® Conference Luncheon on May 9, 2013 at the West Baton Rouge Conference Center. This award is the highest honor PCAL bestows upon individuals or organizations that have made a difference in the lives of children.
Currently, Barbara is Catholic Charities Coordinator of Safe Families for Children, a nationwide faith-based partnership that focuses on child well-being, rather than child protection, by strengthening and empowering families in crisis.
“Throughout her career, but particularly her work with Safe Families for Children, she remains committed to our most vulnerable members of our society, children.” Said Stephanie Sterling CCDBR Maternity and Adoption Director.
She joined CCDBR in 2001 as an International Adoption Social Worker, spearheading the rigorous process for the agency to become Hague Accredited, the gold standard for agencies specializing in international adoption.
With over 35 years in child welfare service, Barbara began her career as a family visitor with the State. Barbara served as Director of the Louisiana Branch of Bethany Christian Services and a consultant to the Child Welfare League of America. Barbara was also in a private practice for individual, family, and group counseling.
Barbara inspired generations of social workers to think critically and to implement best practice in child welfare and adoption by bringing the Adoption Competency course to Louisiana, facilitating a session each year. She is a member of the LSU Law Institute’s Adoption Code Sub Committee and also serves on the Children’s Coalition of Greater Baton Rouge Advocacy Task Force.
“Barbara has made child well-being and child abuse prevention her life work,” said Stephanie Sterling, CCDBR Pregnancy and Adoption Department Director. “By her actions and deeds, she engages, challenges, and inspires those around her to be the best social workers they can be for the families they serve.”
Barbara is a graduate of the LSU School of Social Work and a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. She has completed a 120 hour post-graduate Adoption Competency certificate course with Hunter College. In 2009, Barbara received the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute’s Angel in Adoption Award.
